The 0460426103 is a classic Bosch VE (Verteiler) mechanical injection pump. It is responsible for drawing fuel from the tank, pressurizing it, mechanically timing the injection event, and distributing the fuel to all six cylinders. While incredibly robust, these mechanical pumps eventually succumb to wear, fuel contamination, or governor issues. 3. How the Bosch VE Pump Works

- Distribution: A rotating distributor head routes the high-pressure fuel to each of the six injector lines in the correct firing order.
- Metering/Timing: A mechanical flyweight governor controls engine speed, and an internal timing advance mechanism adjusts injection timing based on RPM.
4. Failure Symptoms & Diagnosis
Symptom 1: Hard Starting or No-Start
Cause: The most common cause of a no-start on a VE pump is a failed Fuel Shutoff Solenoid (FSS). If the solenoid doesn't open, zero fuel reaches the plunger. Another cause is air intrusion or a loss of prime, as the internal transfer pump cannot pull fuel through a massive air pocket.
Diagnosis: First, check for 12V (or 24V, depending on application) at the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid while cranking. If voltage is present but you don't hear an audible "click," the solenoid is dead. You can temporarily remove the solenoid plunger and spring to bypass it (the engine will only shut off via manual air restriction or fuel starvation). If the FSS is good, bleed the injector lines at the injectors to check for air.
Symptom 2: Engine "Runaway" or Hanging Revs
Cause: The mechanical governor flyweights or linkages inside the pump are worn, sticking, or broken. This prevents the pump from reducing fuel delivery when you lift off the throttle.
Diagnosis: Disconnect the external throttle linkage to ensure the pedal or cable isn't binding. If the linkage is free but the engine RPM still hangs or races uncontrollably, the pump must be removed and rebuilt or replaced. Warning: Always have a solid board ready to block the air intake to stop a runaway diesel engine!
Symptom 3: Low Power and Sluggish Response
Cause: The internal vane transfer pump is worn, resulting in low internal case pressure. This prevents the mechanical timing advance from working correctly, retarding the injection timing and killing power. A clogged fuel filter will cause the exact same symptom.
Diagnosis: Replace the fuel filter first. Check for restricted fuel supply lines. If fuel supply is perfect but power is still low (accompanied by grey/white smoke under load), the internal pump timing advance is likely failing due to wear.
Symptom 4: Fuel Leaks from the Pump Body
Cause: The VE pump has several O-rings and seals (throttle shaft seal, distributor head O-ring, governor cover seal) that dry out, flatten, and leak over time—especially with the transition to modern Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD), which lacks the lubricity of older fuels.
Diagnosis: Wipe the pump completely dry and run the engine to pinpoint the leak. While a leaking throttle shaft seal can sometimes be replaced on the vehicle, a leaking distributor head O-ring requires pump removal and teardown.
5. Replacement Procedure
⚠️ Critical Note: Replacing a mechanical injection pump requires precise engine timing. If you remove the pump without locking the engine timing, the engine will not run correctly when the new pump is installed.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Locate the timing pin on the backside of the timing gear housing (camshaft gear). Bar the engine over by hand until the timing pin drops into the hole in the cam gear. This locks the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) for Cylinder #1.
- Clean the engine area around the injection pump.
- Disconnect the throttle linkage, fuel supply/return lines, and the wire to the Fuel Shutoff Solenoid.
- Remove the six high-pressure injection lines. Cap all fittings.
- Remove the oil fill tube/access cover on the front timing cover to access the pump drive gear nut.
- Remove the pump gear nut and washer. Be extremely careful not to drop the washer or nut into the timing cover!
- Use a gear puller to pop the pump gear loose from the pump's tapered shaft. Do not rotate the engine.
- Remove the three mounting nuts holding the pump to the timing case and withdraw the pump. Be sure to retrieve the woodruff key from the shaft if it doesn't stay in place.
- Install the new 0460426103 pump. Ensure the woodruff key is properly aligned with the slot in the pump gear.
- Push the pump against the timing case. Align the timing marks on the pump flange with the marks on the timing case, then tighten the mounting nuts.
- Torque the pump gear nut to Cummins specifications (typically around 48 lb-ft / 65 Nm).
- Crucial Step: Pull the engine timing pin back out of the cam gear so it does not shear when the engine starts!
- Reconnect all lines, linkage, and electrical connections.
- Bleed the fuel system up to the pump, then crack open injectors #1, #3, and #5. Crank the engine until fuel spurts from the loose fittings, tighten them, and start the engine.

- Fuel Additives: Because the VE pump relies entirely on diesel fuel for lubrication, the introduction of ULSD has been hard on them. Using a high-quality lubricity additive with every fill-up will drastically extend the life of the pump's internal cam plate and rollers.
- Keep it Clean: Change your fuel filters regularly. Mechanical clearances inside the distributor head are measured in microns; dirt will score the plunger instantly.
- Don't Turn Up the Fuel Too Much: "Turning up" a VE pump (adjusting the max fuel screw or smoke pin) is popular for gaining horsepower, but doing it excessively raises exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) to dangerous levels and puts immense stress on the pump internals.
